Multi-Rigid-Body Approximation of Human Hands with Application to Digital Twin

Human hand simulation plays a critical role in digital twin applications, requiring models that balance anatomical fidelity with computational efficiency. We present a complete pipeline for constructing multi-rigid-body approximations of human hands that preserve realistic appearance while enabling real-time physics simulation. Starting from optical motion capture of a specific human hand, we construct a personalized MANO (Multi-Abstracted hand model with Neural Operations) model and convert it to a URDF (Unified Robot Description Format) representation with anatomically consistent joint axes. The key technical challenge is projecting MANO's unconstrained SO(3) joint rotations onto the kinematically constrained joints of the rigid-body model. We derive closed-form solutions for single degree-of-freedom joints and introduce a Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH)-corrected iterative method for two degree-of-freedom joints that properly handles the non-commutativity of rotations. We validate our approach through digital twin experiments where reinforcement learning policies control the multi-rigid-body hand to replay captured human demonstrations. Quantitative evaluation shows sub-centimeter reconstruction error and successful grasp execution across diverse manipulation tasks.


DexNDM: Closing the Reality Gap for Dexterous In-Hand Rotation via Joint-Wise Neural Dynamics Model

Achieving generalized in-hand object rotation remains a significant challenge in robotics, largely due to the difficulty of transferring policies from simulation to the real world. The complex, contact-rich dynamics of dexterous manipulation create a "reality gap" that has limited prior work to constrained scenarios involving simple geometries, limited object sizes and aspect ratios, constrained wrist poses, or customized hands. We address this sim-to-real challenge with a novel framework that enables a single policy, trained in simulation, to generalize to a wide variety of objects and conditions in the real world. The core of our method is a joint-wise dynamics model that learns to bridge the reality gap by effectively fitting limited amount of real-world collected data and then adapting the sim policy's actions accordingly. The model is highly data-efficient and generalizable across different whole-hand interaction distributions by factorizing dynamics across joints, compressing system-wide influences into low-dimensional variables, and learning each joint's evolution from its own dynamic profile, implicitly capturing these net effects. We pair this with a fully autonomous data collection strategy that gathers diverse, real-world interaction data with minimal human intervention. Our complete pipeline demonstrates unprecedented generality: a single policy successfully rotates challenging objects with complex shapes (e.g., animals), high aspect ratios (up to 5.33), and small sizes, all while handling diverse wrist orientations and rotation axes. Robust Point Cloud Registration via Geometric Overlapping Guided Rotation Search

Point cloud registration based on correspondences computes the rigid transformation that maximizes the number of inliers constrained within the noise threshold. Current state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods employing spatial compatibility graphs or branch-and-bound (BnB) search mainly focus on registration under high outlier ratios. However, graph-based methods require at least quadratic space and time complexity for graph construction, while multi-stage BnB search methods often suffer from inaccuracy due to local optima between decomposed stages. This paper proposes a geometric maximum overlapping registration framework via rotation-only BnB search. The rigid transformation is decomposed using Chasles' theorem into a translation along rotation axis and a 2D rigid transformation. The optimal rotation axis and angle are searched via BnB, with residual parameters formulated as range maximum query (RMQ) problems. Firstly, the top-k candidate rotation axes are searched within a hemisphere parameterized by cube mapping, and the translation along each axis is estimated through interval stabbing of the correspondences projected onto that axis. Secondly, the 2D registration is relaxed to 1D rotation angle search with 2D RMQ of geometric overlapping for axis-aligned rectangles, which is solved deterministically in polynomial time using sweep line algorithm with segment tree. Experimental results on 3DMatch, 3DLoMatch, and KITTI datasets demonstrate superior accuracy and efficiency over SOTA methods, while the time complexity is polynomial and the space complexity increases linearly with the number of points, even in the worst case.


Accelerating Outlier-robust Rotation Estimation by Stereographic Projection

Rotation estimation plays a fundamental role in many computer vision and robot tasks. However, efficiently estimating rotation in large inputs containing numerous outliers (i.e., mismatches) and noise is a recognized challenge. Many robust rotation estimation methods have been designed to address this challenge. Unfortunately, existing methods are often inapplicable due to their long computation time and the risk of local optima. In this paper, we propose an efficient and robust rotation estimation method. Specifically, our method first investigates geometric constraints involving only the rotation axis. Then, it uses stereographic projection and spatial voting techniques to identify the rotation axis and angle. Furthermore, our method efficiently obtains the optimal rotation estimation and can estimate multiple rotations simultaneously. To verify the feasibility of our method, we conduct comparative experiments using both synthetic and real-world data. The results show that, with GPU assistance, our method can solve large-scale ($10^6$ points) and severely corrupted (90\% outlier rate) rotation estimation problems within 0.07 seconds, with an angular error of only 0.01 degrees, which is superior to existing methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency.


AnyRotate: Gravity-Invariant In-Hand Object Rotation with Sim-to-Real Touch

Human hands are capable of in-hand manipulation in the presence of different hand motions. For a robot hand, harnessing rich tactile information to achieve this level of dexterity still remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we present AnyRotate, a system for gravity-invariant multi-axis in-hand object rotation using dense featured sim-to-real touch. We tackle this problem by training a dense tactile policy in simulation and present a sim-to-real method for rich tactile sensing to achieve zero-shot policy transfer. Our formulation allows the training of a unified policy to rotate unseen objects about arbitrary rotation axes in any hand direction. In our experiments, we highlight the benefit of capturing detailed contact information when handling objects with varying properties. Interestingly, despite not having explicit slip detection, we found rich multi-fingered tactile sensing can implicitly detect object movement within grasp and provide a reactive behavior that improves the robustness of the policy. Accurate Pose Prediction on Signed Distance Fields for Mobile Ground Robots in Rough Terrain

Abstract-- Autonomous locomotion for mobile ground robots in unstructured environments such as waypoint navigation or flipper control requires a sufficiently accurate prediction of the robot-terrain interaction. Heuristics like occupancy grids or traversability maps are widely used but limit actions available to robots with active flippers as joint positions are not taken into account. We present a novel iterative geometric method to predict the 3D pose of mobile ground robots with active flippers on uneven ground with high accuracy and online planning capabilities. This is achieved by utilizing the ability of signed distance fields to represent surfaces with sub-voxel accuracy. The effectiveness of the presented approach is demonstrated on two different tracked robots in simulation and on a real platform. Compared to a tracking system as ground truth, our method predicts the robot position and orientation with an average accuracy of 3.11 cm and 3.91 Euclidean Signed Distance Field (ESDF) of the environment (top-left), the 3D pose and terrain interaction are predicted I. A Novel Dynamic Light-Section 3D Reconstruction Method for Wide-Range Sensing

Existing galvanometer-based laser scanning systems are challenging to apply in multi-scale 3D reconstruction because of the difficulty in achieving a balance between high reconstruction accuracy and a wide reconstruction range. This paper presents a novel method that synchronizes laser scanning by switching the field-of-view (FOV) of a camera using multi-galvanometers. In addition to the advanced hardware setup, we establish a comprehensive mathematical model of the system by modeling dynamic camera, dynamic laser, and their combined interaction. We then propose a high-precision and flexible calibration method by constructing an error model and minimizing the objective function. Finally, we evaluate the performance of the proposed system by scanning standard components. The evaluation results demonstrate that the accuracy of the proposed 3D reconstruction system achieves 0.3 mm when the measurement range is extended to 1100 mm $\times$ 1300 mm $\times$ 650 mm. With the same reconstruction accuracy, the reconstruction range is expanded by a factor of 25, indicating that the proposed method simultaneously allows for high-precision and wide-range 3D reconstruction in industrial applications.


Robot Hand-Eye Calibration using Structure-from-Motion

In this paper we propose a new flexible method for hand-eye calibration. The vast majority of existing hand-eye calibration techniques requires a calibration rig which is used in conjunction with camera pose estimation methods. Instead, we combine structure-from-motion with known robot motions and we show that the solution can be obtained in linear form. The latter solves for both the hand-eye parameters and for the unknown scale factor inherent with structure-from-motion methods. The algebraic analysis that is made possible with such a linear formulation allows to investigate not only the well known case of general screw motions but also such singular motions as pure translations, pure rotations, and planar motions. In essence, the robot-mounted camera looks to an unknown rigid layout, tracks points over an image sequence and estimates the camera-to-robot relationship. Such a self calibration process is relevant for unmanned vehicles, robots working in remote places, and so forth. We conduct a large number of experiments which validate the quality of the method by comparing it with existing ones.


Enhancing the Performance of a Biomimetic Robotic Elbow-and-Forearm System Through Bionics-Inspired Optimization

This paper delineates the formulation and verification of an innovative robotic forearm and elbow design, mirroring the intricate biomechanics of human skeletal and ligament systems. Conventional robotic models often undervalue the substantial function of soft tissues, leading to a compromise between compactness, safety, stability, and range of motion. In contrast, this study proposes a holistic replication of biological joints, encompassing bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons, culminating in a biomimetic robot. The research underscores the compact and stable structure of the human forearm, attributable to a tri-bone framework and diverse soft tissues. The methodology involves exhaustive examinations of human anatomy, succeeded by a theoretical exploration of the contribution of soft tissues to the stability of the prototype. The evaluation results unveil remarkable parallels between the range of motion of the robotic joints and their human counterparts. The robotic elbow emulates 98.8% of the biological elbow's range of motion, with high torque capacities of 11.25 Nm (extension) and 24 Nm (flexion). Similarly, the robotic forearm achieves 58.6% of the human forearm's rotational range, generating substantial output torques of 14 Nm (pronation) and 7.8 Nm (supination). Moreover, the prototype exhibits significant load-bearing abilities, resisting a 5kg dumbbell load without substantial displacement. It demonstrates a payload capacity exceeding 4kg and rapid action capabilities, such as lifting a 2kg dumbbell at a speed of 0.74Hz and striking a ping-pong ball at an end-effector speed of 3.2 m/s. This research underscores that a detailed anatomical study can address existing robotic design obstacles, optimize performance and anthropomorphic resemblance, and reaffirm traditional anatomical principles.


User Feedback and Sample Weighting for Ill-Conditioned Hand-Eye Calibration

Hand-eye calibration is an important and extensively researched method for calibrating rigidly coupled sensors, solely based on estimates of their motion. Due to the geometric structure of this problem, at least two motion estimates with non-parallel rotation axes are required for a unique solution. If the majority of rotation axes are almost parallel, the resulting optimization problem is ill-conditioned. In this paper, we propose an approach to automatically weight the motion samples of such an ill-conditioned optimization problem for improving the conditioning. The sample weights are chosen in relation to the local density of all available rotation axes. Furthermore, we present an approach for estimating the sensitivity and conditioning of the cost function, separated into the translation and the rotation part. This information can be employed as user feedback when recording the calibration data to prevent ill-conditioning in advance. We evaluate and compare our approach on artificially augmented data from the KITTI odometry dataset.
